Our wrestling class teaches the basic grappling movements of the first Olympic sport. This class includes takedowns and using the upper and lower body with exercises and drills designed to better your wrestling skills and improve your ground technique.

The class is taken by Peter Robson who learnt wrestling from an Iranian coach, Saeed Esmaeli. Saeed’s father, Olympian Amir Esmaelli won numerous Olympic Wrestling titles in UK and Europe during the 1990’s before passing his wrestling knowledge to his son.

Pete draws inspiration from ‘catch wrestling’ which is a wrestling style developed in the UK that permits submissions to increase effectiveness against opponents.

Our classes incorporate a wide range of styles with varying rules from both freestyle wrestling and grappling submission wrestling. We look at the application of submissions on the ground and pinning techniques.

In Freestyle Wrestling, you are allowed to hold the legs of the opponent, to make trips and to actively use your legs.

Grappling Submission Wrestling is a form of wrestling which consists of controlling the opponent without using striking. It uses immobilisation techniques such as locks whether the opponent is standing, or on the ground after a throw. It plays an important part of MMA training.

Peter draws influence from many wrestling styles however he is trying to help his students find ways of applying it in a modern context – whether it’s BJJ, MMA or nogi submission grappling.

What do you need to bring?

Full kit includes wrestling boots, rash guard and however loosely fitting shorts and t shirt. Knee pads and spats/grappling tights are also recommended but optional.
