What is Mixed Martian Arts?
Mixed Martial Arts is the fastest growing sport in the world. Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground, from a variety of other combat sports including boxing, Muay Thai, Kick-boxing, Karate, Judo, Tae kwon do and BJJ. Rounds are five minutes long and there are typically three rounds in a contest, unless it’s a championship fight, in which case, the contest lasts five rounds. The first Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) (one of the best mma promotions) event took place on November 12, 1993 and is now the biggest event in the history of Mixed Martial Arts.
MMA rules are set under the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts. The rules include the size of the fighting cage, specifications about hand wrapping, information on judging and fouls, warnings and many other things.
A single warning will be issued for the following infractions only:
A) Holding or grabbing fence
B) Holding opponent’s shorts or gloves
C) The presence of more than one second on the apron
Some examples of Fouls include:
1) Butting with the head
2) Eye gouging of any kind
4) Spitting at an opponent
5) Hair pulling
6) Fish hooking
7) Groin attacks of any kind
8) Putting a finger into any orifice or any cut or laceration of an opponent
9) Small joint manipulation
10) Striking downward using the point of the elbow
Disqualification occurs after any combination of 3 fouls or if a foul is determined by the referee as intentional and flagrant. Typically, a foul will result in a point being deducted, which could be crucial in a three round fight. A fouled fighter has up to five minutes to recuperate.

MMA Weights Divisions
The weight classes for mixed martial arts contests are:
Flyweight 125 pounds and under
Bantamweight over 125 to 135 pounds
Featherweight over 135 to 145 pounds
Lightweight over 145 to 155 pounds
Welterweight over 155 to 170 pounds
Middleweight over 170 to 185 pounds
Light Heavyweight over 185 to 205 pounds
Heavyweight over 205 to 265 pounds
Super Heavyweight over 265 pounds
MMA Judging and Scoring
There are three judges sat on each side of the cage, each with a different viewpoint of the contest. They evaluate MMA techniques, such as effective striking, effective grappling, takedowns from standing position to mount position, control of the fighting area, effective aggressiveness and defence.
Judges use the 10-Point Must System, the winner of the round gets 10 points, the loser gets 9 or less, except for a rare even round, which is scored (10-10).
Judges should use a sliding scale and recognise the length of time the contestants are either standing or on the ground, as follows:
1) If 90% of a round was spent on the ground, then:
a) Effective Grappling is weighed first
b) Effective Striking is then weighed
2) If 90 % of a round was standing, then:
a) Effective Striking is weighed first
b) Effective grappling is then weighed
3) If a round ends with 50% standing and 50% grounded, striking and grappling are weighed more equally.
Our MMA sessions combine Muay Thai, Boxing, Kickboxing, Grappling, Boxing and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This is a full contact sport so be ready for some hard work and up-close fighting techniques. Classes are taught by Pro MMA Fighter Andy Kerr and our striking coach Greg Winter.
All classes start with a energetic conditioning warm up after which the instructor demonstrates various techniques, set ups and positions. Students will then drill these and use them in the sparring that follows. You will need shorts and a t-shirt, hand wraps, gloves, shin pads and a mouth guard. Please note, there should be no zips or buttons on any item of clothing.
